My name is Paul Lewis and I am a fully qualified, BACP accredited, ‘Humanistic Integrative Counsellor’ based at CBT and Counselling Maidstone. ‘Integrative counselling’ means I have studied more than one approach to counselling. This enables me to draw upon different methods and tailor a bespoke approach for every individual I see.
I follow the ‘person centered’ approach during therapy, because I believe each person is the expert of their own lives. Therefore, I will encourage you to lead the sessions, whilst l listen without judgement. I will treat you with empathy, acceptance and honesty at all times.
During our sessions I use the language of ‘Transactional Analysis’ (TA). This is a form of modern psychology that examines a person’s relationships and interactions. This can be helpful in understanding ourselves more fully. Following the ‘Gestalt’ approach to therapy I will help you focus on your present thoughts, feelings and behaviour to better understand the way you relate to others.
How I can help
Counselling is an opportunity to express your thoughts and feelings in a safe and confidential environment. If you are experiencing any kind of difficulty, distress or dissatisfaction in your life. Then you might find it easier to talk to someone who is professional and independent of family and friends.
You may want to change the way you think or behave towards an issue, or you might choose to look more deeply at past experiences to help make sense of what you are going through. I can offer you understanding through gentle challenging to help you gain clarity about where you are, where you want to get to and how to move ahead.
During our sessions at CBT and Counselling Maidstone I will gently encourage you to talk openly about your thoughts and feelings. Together, we will use different methods including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and solution-focussed exercises to help you make noticeable changes.
I provide a relationship in which you can learn to find and trust yourself and begin using the skills you have acquired. If you are willing, counselling can help you re-discover your sense of worth and wellbeing.
With over 8 years professional experience in both private practice and charity organisations, I have worked with a number of emotional problems. Including sex and sexuality issues, addictions, self-harm, depression, anxiety, stress and bereavement.
However, it is my personal life experience that has had the biggest influence on how I practice counselling. Having experienced many of the struggles we all face, and some more uncommon. I can relate and put myself into your shoes to really try and understand your experience.
Through the use of ongoing Supervision, I abide by the Ethical Framework laid out by the BACP. I am committed to undergoing continuing professional development in order to provide a quality and up-to-date service.
